Las Catedrales Beach - The Icon of Spain's Northern Coast

Las Catedrales Beach, also known as 📍Praia das Catedrais, is one of the most stunning locations on the Spanish coast. It is situated near the town of Ribadeo in Galicia and is famous for its impressive rock formations that resemble Gothic cathedrals, creating an incredible landscape at low tide. This is a must-visit spot when traveling through northern Spain.

Here are a few tips to help you fully enjoy this amazing place 🙌🏻

Planning Your Visit

To fully experience the beauty of this coastal area, plan your visit during low tide when the rock formations are most visible. Check the tide schedule before heading out to the rocks. Note: During the summer season and holidays, you may need to reserve your entry to the beach in advance due to environmental protection restrictions.

There are various parking options for campers around Ribadeo and the famous beach. Here are a few:

  • Main Parking at the Beach:The nearest parking is right at the entrance to the beach. It's perfect for a short stop, but it can fill up quickly in the season. Overnight staying is not allowed (at least during the high season)!
  • Área de Autocaravanas Ribadeo: This modern camper parking is located in Ribadeo, about 10 km from the beach. It offers all necessary amenities, such as electricity, water, and gray water disposal. It's a great base for exploring the area.
  • Campsites Nearby: Several campsites near Ribadeo offer spots for campers, such as Camping Ribadeo and Camping Rinlo Costa. We stayed at 📍Camping A Nosa Casa, which is right by the beaches with a boardwalk leading to the cathedral beach.

Local Attractions

  • Ribadeo: A charming town with a beautiful port, picturesque streets, and interesting landmarks. Be sure to visit the old Celtic bridge and the Illa Pancha lighthouse.
  • Hiking Trails: The area around Las Catedrales features many scenic hiking trails that lead through cliffs, offering spectacular views!
  • Restaurants: Don't miss the chance to try fresh seafood and traditional Galician dishes in local restaurants, especially in Ribadeo. Ribadeo.

This place had long been on my photographic to-do list. Unfortunately, this time nature had other plans. High tides, and strong winds combined with rain prevented me from getting close to the sharp rock formations and taking the photos I had in mind.

Although the weather conditions weren't ideal, the views we could enjoy were breathtaking! The Galician coast continuously surprised us with its wild beauty. Every corner of this region had something special – from dramatic cliffs to picturesque villages and coves...
