The 'Castle' tells the story of Spain and the Age of Exploration
Castillo de Colomares in Benalmadena is a unique attraction on the map of Costa del Sol. It's not exactly a castle but rather a monument commemorating Christopher Columbus and his achievements, built in a blend of architectural styles dominant in medieval Spain. Here, you'll find intertwining fountains, Gothic towers, arches inspired by Arabic influences, and many symbols referring to the three coexisting cultures of medieval Spain - Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The idea was born in the imagination of architect Dr. Esteban Martin and was realized between 1987 and 1994.
It is claimed that within this unique monument lies the smallest chapel in the world measuring just 1.96 square meters, dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, the patron saint of mercy.
The whole place creates a truly fairytale landscape. It's worth stepping in and delving into the history hidden behind the richly decorated façade of this peculiar castle...
